Who we are...
Aztlan Graduation and Scholarship Commitee is the official Chicano Studies Graduation Comittee. We were founded in 1969 as the Chicano Graduation Commitee and are here to fulfill the needs of the Chicano/a ,Central American, and Latino/a students on campus.
What we do…
We are a student-run organization, which means that we, the students, make all of the decisions regarding the graduation/reception ceremony. We raise funds, not only for the graduation, but also to give out scholarships to CSUN students.
The ceremony
At the graduation ceremony, graduates are encouraged to wear clothing of their cultural origin as a way to honor their families, ancestors, and heritage. This isn't mandatory and they may wear whatever they choose, but graduating in cultural clothing is encouraged as a way to give tribute to those who have gotten them this far. Upon recognition, all Aztlan Grad graduates will be allowed to give a brief speech in any language thanking parents, friends, professors, mentors, family, etc.
Fees
You do have to pay a fee to be a part of the graduation, the fee right now is $50 but it will go up soon. The fee is also dependent on the amount of volunteer hours that you put in. Your fee covers: your plaque, your meal at the reception, your certificate of participation from us, a certificate for parents/mentors and a single flower for your parents/mentors and a sash.
